This week in 1879, cricket’s first terrorisingly quick fast bowler took Test Cricket’s first ever hat-trick. On that January 2nd afternoon Fred ‘The Demon’ Spofforth, achieved the feat by removing Vernon Royle, Francis McKinnon and Tom Emmett. In the 138 years of Tests to follow, just 38 men have been able to replicate Spofforth’s efforts.
