Canberra Raiders squad member Troy Dargan died in a motorcycle accident while on holiday in the Cook Islands, as reported by the ABC and other outlets.
Troy had only recently joined the Raiders on a two year deal, having spent much of career at Souths prior (and a stint in the Broncos system). He was on the “supplemental” list, meaning he was outside the top 30, but was expected to be an important part of the club’s halves depth. While we are yet to hear from the club, I would expect a formal statement to come out on Boxing Day.
Our thoughts got out to his parents, Troy and Wendy and his siblings Tamalee and Korokai. We honestly can’t fathom what his family must be going through right now. There are no words that would comfort. Losing a loved one is tough enough but one with so much in front of him must be beyond devastating. 26 is too young. I hope the club and the NRL are able to provide any assistance that family needs in this time.
While Troy hasn’t been with the Raiders long this would likely have an impact on the playing group. An unending list of his teammates have conveyed their sorrow on social media. The club’s welfare officers will have a busy Christmas period. We are also aware that he has connections across the competition and the rugby league community. Other clubs have already put out statements, and players across the competition have expressed their sadness. Troy was clearly loved everywhere he went.
Our condolences to all the people that knew him.
